Our School

A distinctive educational experience for South Carolina’s most deserving students.

The SC School for the Deaf and the Blind is the state’s only specialized school for deaf, blind or sensory multi-disabled students. Offering K-12 educational programs on its 160-acre main campus in Spartanburg and outreach services through school districts and partners across the state, the public school is a Palmetto Gold School recipient of more than 12 years and has been recognized as a Red Carpet School for its outstanding customer service and family-friendly environment.

The School for the Deaf: for students with a hearing loss of educational significance, offering on-campus educational programs, mainstreaming within the Spartanburg County School districts, prevocational/vocational training programs, and independent living skills programming.

The School for the Blind: for students with a vision loss of educational significance, offering on-campus educational programs, mainstreaming within the Spartanburg County School districts, prevocational/vocational training programs and assistive technology, and independent living skills programming.

The Cedar Springs Academy: for students with some level of hearing or vision loss and at least one additional disability (including students who are classified as deaf-blind), offering on-campus functional academic programs, prevocational/vocational training programs, assistive technology, and independent living skills programming.

Special Programs

Career and Technology Education (CTE)

CTE hosts a Career Training program, an Industrial Skills Development Center and an Occupational Diploma program. The CTE department offers courses including career development, computer applications/keyboarding, computer science, digital arts, driver education, horticulture, job shadowing/mentoring, building construction, family and consumer science, and more.

Residential Program

SCSDB provides its students with an exceptional residential program complimenting its educational services, including athletics and fitness, enrichment classes (music, technology, dance, community service and more), employment opportunities, independent living skills development, recreational programs, and a tutoring program.

Transportation

The school provides statewide bus transportation for its students daily, on weekends and during holidays. Busses are equipped with assistive devices for students and each bus has a special-needs trained bus driver and bus attendant.

Volunteer Program

Volunteering at SCSDB is just one more way individuals in the community show their support. Volunteer positions include classroom assistants, clerical assistants, tutors and athletic/special event helpers.

SCSDB is accredited by the South Carolina State Department of Education, the Southern Associates of Colleges and Schools/Council on Accreditation and School Improvement, and the Conference of Educational Administrators of Schools and Programs for the Deaf.
