Day 17

Day 17

July 26th 2024

Today is National Disability Independence Day which commemorates the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (SDS) on July 26, 1990.  The day not only celebrates the anniversary of the ADA but it also serves as a way to bring awareness and break down barriers individuals with disabilities face every day.

Someone who is doing this at the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind is Valerie Feiling, the principal at the School for the Blind.  Valerie has been in education for more than 15 years, and she says it gets better each year! Her favorite subject in school was English because she could read about all of the wonderful places that she wanted to visit or about the people she wanted to meet. She loves that reading can transport you to a different time and place!

When asked what she hopes most for her students, Mrs. Feiling said, "My hope for my students is that they see what I see in them so they can soar and fulfill their goals and dreams. I am most proud of the kindness and respect they show others. They deserve to find true joy in this world with family, friends, and a career that they love. I want all of our academic, social, and behavior programming to help students build the skills to accomplish their dreams!"
