Day 20

Day 20

July 29th 2024

In January 2020, when we were starting to hear the scary news about an emerging coronavirus, some light arrived in an encouraging idea presented to us by teacher Lori Seymour. She had a dream to expand graphic communications classes and build an innovative Screen-Printing Shop at our Applied Academic Center. Through project-based learning, students could have a new avenue for education and job skills. We named the program Designing the Future and hoped to raise a total of $30,000. After we were all sent to work from home in March, we continued to apply for grants. With the help of 3 funders, we raised a total of $52,500!

With the support of AFL, PowerEd, and Truist Foundation, we were able to create a state-of-the-art Screen-Printing Shop with a 6-station Press, Conveyer and Flash Dryers, Green Filtration System, Washout Booth, and Drying Racks. We purchased all of the supplies needed to run the equipment and print items with many different designs. A graphic arts curriculum was designed to teach students how to use the equipment and become proficient in STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Arts and Mathematics) skills. The Screen-Printing Shop has the added benefit of being used to make school t-shirts, tote bags, and other items for sale. The monies from these sales are put back into the program so there is a fund for purchasing more supplies as needed. Our sponsors’ generosity is a gift that keeps on giving!
