The South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind Bocce team participates in the Area 12 Special Olympics. Area 12 consists of teams from Spartanburg, Union, and Cherokee counties. Our Special Olympics Bocce team goes to Ft. Jackson in Columbia, South Carolina every year to compete in the Summer Games. The Head Coach is Aly Davis and Assistant Head Coach is Nate Fuhrwerk.
The Foundation assists with all travel for these athletes and provides the athletes with the opportunity to stay on the Ft. Jackson Military Base while they are at the Summer Games.
Playing sports has many benefits for students. Many athletes do better academically and sports teach teamwork and problem-solving skills. In addition to the physical benefits of sports, they help boost self-esteem. An added benefit for the students at the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind is that playing sports exposes them to people and places they may not otherwise have a chance to experience. They also get a chance to practice the real life skills they learn on our campus.
