Day 33

Our students come back to campus tomorrow.  Getting ready to have students on campus again makes us think back to a special time of year:  graduation.  Graduation at the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind (SCSDB) is a profoundly moving and joyous occasion marked by a unique sense of intimacy and pride. Unlike larger institutions where graduation can feel impersonal, the smaller scale at SCSDB allows for a deep connection between the students, the teachers and families, making the celebration even more special.

On graduation day, the atmosphere is charged with anticipation and joy. The students, dressed in their caps and gowns, beam with pride as they prepare to walk across the stage. The teachers, many of whom have worked closely with our students for years, share in the joy and excitement, knowing what it took for each student to reach this point. As families and friends watch the ceremony, their faces are filled with pride and emotion as they celebrate the achievements of their loved ones. One of the time-honored traditions of graduation is for the graduates to gather in the atrium and all throw their caps up in the air after the ceremony has concluded.

During our celebration of 175 years of providing education and training for our students, we celebrate each graduation as a continuation of the promise that the Reverend and Mrs. Newton Pinckney Walker made to the children of South Carolina who are deaf, blind or sensory multi-disabled. Then as now, our purpose is to prepare our students to live a full and productive lives. Graduation is the culmination of that promise.
