Our students came back to campus today! We are so excited to have them back on campus and for all the possibilities that this school year holds. It reminds us of a special day back in January…January 22nd, when the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind officially turned 175 years old today. See below to read a special 175 Years message that SCSDB president, Jolene Madison, shared back in January.

Message from Jolene:
When the Reverend Newton Pinckney Walker recognized that children in SC who were deaf did not have access to appropriate instruction, he decided to do something about it. He researched deaf education and, in January of 1849, opened a school in Spartanburg and began providing quality school programming for five students who were deaf.
Five years later, he followed suit by establishing a program as well for students who were blind. I wonder if he knew that his legacy would still be going strong nearly 175 years later. I wonder if he realized that he was paving the way for access, empowerment, and equity.
I am grateful for the incredible visionaries who paved the way for us to engage, empower, and equip students for success. 175 years of service. 175 years of meeting the needs of students across South Carolina. Thank you for being part of our past, our present, and our future!
