Day 47

Day 47

August 25th 2024

In 2020, there were 259,215 people employed in agribusiness in South Carolina, yielding an annual labor income of 12.3 billion dollars!  Annette Bodie, agricultural science teacher at our Applied Academic Center, has been working diligently to teach our students valuable skills in the growing agribusiness field. However, she has been limited in what she can do because she is working with a very small and outdated greenhouse. It is not wheelchair accessible and blind students cannot use canes for lack of space.  There is no room for deaf students to see interpreters during lessons. This year, Ms. Bodie and school administrators asked the Foundation to help them make a dream of a new greenhouse into reality.  The Cultivating Careers program will provide a more comprehensive agricultural education experience through the installation of a large, state-of-the-art Greenhouse/Land Laboratory. With the help of 5 funders, so far, we have raised a total of $77,500.

With the support of AFL, Foundation for the Carolinas – Longleaf Fund, Milliken & Company Charitable Foundation, Downtown Spartanburg Sertoma Club, The Episcopal Church of the Advent, and some matching funding from SCSDB, we are in the initial phase of this project. SCSDB will hire a consultant to produce architectural drawings, and the next step will involve getting construction approvals from the State. The plans are to install the Greenhouse in early 2025 so that students can grow plants and produce for the annual Spring Sale, to which the public is invited. We hope to see you there.
