Day 52

Day 52

August 30th 2024

The South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind participates in the Area 12 Special Olympics, which consists of Spartanburg, Union, and Cherokee counties.  Our Special Olympics Volleyball team goes to Ft. Jackson in Columbia, South Carolina every year to compete in the Summer Games.  The Head Coach is Aly Davis and Assistant Coach is Nate Fuhrwerk.

The Foundation assists with all lodging, meals, and transportation for the Volleyball team and provides the athletes with the opportunity to stay on the Ft. Jackson Miliary Base while they are at the Summer Games.  Playing sports has many benefits for students.  Many athletes do better academically and sports teach teamwork and problem-solving skills.  In addition to the physical benefits of sports, they help boost self-esteem.  An added benefit for the students at the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind is that playing sports exposes them to people and places they may not otherwise have a chance to experience.  They also get a chance to practice the real life skills they learn on our campus.

A green and black cartoon hornet is depicted hitting a volleyball. The image includes the logo for the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind Foundation and the logo for 175 Days of Giving at the bottom. There's a faded historical building in the background.
