Day 53

Day 53

August 31st 2024

Today, on National South Carolina Day, we are highlighting the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind Division of Outreach Services.  The SCSDB Statewide Division of Outreach Services serves children ages 0-21 through its nine statewide major programs. These include Blind and Visually Impaired Education, Deaf and Hard of Hearing Education, Early Intervention, Interpreting Services, Kelly’s Kids Early Childhood Education, SC Braille Production Center, SC Deaf Blind Project, SC Instructional Materials Center, and Visual Language Services. The earliest outreach program dates back to 1984 with others evolving through the years to meet the rising needs of infants/toddlers, students, families and the professional who serve them in South Carolina. Programs are managed by highly qualified, credentialed individuals with many years of experience in their respective fields. The SCSDB Statewide Division of Outreach Services is one of the largest in the nation.

The SCSDB Statewide Division of Outreach Services is proud to have provided services in 46 counties in South Carolina during the 2023-2024 school year. Blind and Visually Impaired Education served 323 students, Deaf and Hard of Hearing Education served 203 students, Early Intervention served 531 children, Interpreting Services filled 3,547 requests, Kelly’s Kids served 22 children, the SC Braille Production Center produced 97,251 pages of braille including tactile graphics, the SC Deaf Blind Project registered 182 students for technical services, and the SC Instructional Materials Center served 318 students providing braille and large print textbooks as well as the distribution of products from the American Printing House for the Blind. Both blind and visually impaired and deaf and hard of hearing students are considered low incidence populations and the SCSDB Statewide Division of Outreach Services had a huge, positive impact on the lives of these students.
