Each year league bowlers across the United States recognize U.S. Bowling League Day on September 3rd. Today we are recognizing the the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind Bowling team. They participate in the Special Olympics and compete in Area 12 which consists of teams from Spartanburg, Union, and Cherokee counties. Our Special Olympics Bowling team goes to Ft. Jackson in Columbia, South Carolina every year to compete in the Summer Games. The Head Coach is Aly Davis and Assistant Head Coach is Nate Fuhrwerk.
The Foundation assists with all transportation, lodging, and meals for the Bowling team and provides the athletes with the opportunity to stay on the Ft. Jackson Military Base while they are at the Summer Games. Playing sports has many benefits for students. Many athletes do better academically and sports teach teamwork and problem-solving skills. In addition to the physical benefits of sports, they help boost self-esteem. An added benefit for the students at the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind is that playing sports exposes them to people and places they may not otherwise have a chance to experience. They also get a chance to practice the real life skills they learn on our campus.
