Day 9

July 18th 2024

Joy Couch serves as the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind Foundation’s Chairwoman.  Joy joined in the Board in 2019.  Before retirement, Joy was the Director of Athletics at the Spartanburg Day School and was also previously the Athletic Director at Converse University.  For 28 years, she was a coach and administrator in Spartanburg County Schools, serving as a physical education teacher and basketball coach in Spartanburg school districts one, three and six.  Joy earned a Master’s of Education degree from the University of South Carolina and a Bachelor of Science degree in health and physical education from Winthrop University. She has worked with Greater Spartanburg Ministries, SC Coaching Association, NCAA Regional Basketball Committee, served as the President of the Conference Carolinas and has served on several Boards.  Currently, Joy is affiliated with the SC Coaching Association Hall of Fame and a member of the Country Club of Spartanburg.

Joy’s parents, Doyle and Sybil Ayers, were teachers at the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind from the early 1960’s to the mid 1980’s.  Her father taught math in the School for the Deaf and her mother was a physical educator and coach.  Her mother coached basketball and track.  During her time as a physical educator, Joy’s mother taught in all three of our schools.  As a child, Joy has special memories of attending many events on campus including athletic events, Mason Dixon Tournaments, Lions Club Christmas Parties, and May Day celebrations. She was very excited to come home and serve on the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind Foundation board.
